Nov '23 Bi-Monthly Update - Peek at the Demigod Companion
5 months ago – Tue, Nov 21, 2023 at 05:59:23 AM

Hi Demigods,

While the Scion team works on our final Stretch Goal rewards, I've got another preview to share with you for our bi-monthly update. Last time we saw a bit of the Path to Apotheosis. This time, we're going to look at the Demigod Companion!

The Demigod Companion

Demigod Companion is a handbook for players and Storyguides alike, with a ridiculous number of new options, abilities, and Titanspawn, among many other things, within its pages. Here’s a peek at its introduction and some further content:

  • Chapter One: Wonders and Worlds provides Dominion Boons for Demigod’s Pantheon Specific Purviews, new Boons, and a walkthrough of new strange places and Terra Incognitae for your characters to explore.
  • Chapter Two: Allies and Companions introduces optional rules for leveling up Creatures alongside their Demigod companions, provides Storyguiding advice for portraying Guides, and includes new Follower organizations and expanded rules for Cults and Covenants.
  • Chapter Three: Items of Power delves into expanded relic crafting rules. It also introduces relic forges and organizations and optional rules for crafting relics from materials gathered from titanspawn. Lastly, it includes new relics from across the pantheons.
  • Chapter Four: Titans and Titanspawn takes a deeper look at the Titans and Titanspawn introduced in Demigod, exploring their backgrounds, goals, and rivalries. Additionally, it offers ideas for Storyguides and players for games involving only one or two people and alternative methods of storytelling at your table using troupe play.

Let’s have a look at some of the relic forges and organizations from Chapter Three:

Relic Forges and Organizations

This section introduces two new resources for Scions to seek out to help their relic crafting endeavors: relic forges and organizations.

Relic Forges

Relic forges are places throughout the World and in various Terra Incognitae that are home to legendary workshops. Within, divine artisans and their apprentices shape their most wondrous creations: weapons, armor, crystal goblets, jewelry, books, or countless other finely-wrought objects. Hephaestus’ anvil rings loud enough to wake the dead as the sword he’s crafting takes shape. In Ariadne’s studio, on the other hand, weavers talk softly or sing paeans as they sit at their looms. A jeweler’s shop tucked into a strip mall caters to Godly clients, setting storied gems into rings and crowns or fixing watches that tick away the moments of a mortal’s life.

Not everyone who works at a relic forge is a God. Some are Legendary creatures, Denizens of the World, or Titanspawn. Crafters include mortal priests and apprentices who’ve learned secret, nearly forgotten techniques. Mortals who owe a debt to the forge’s master shovel coal into the furnace to keep the fires hot or spin yarn from a fertility god’s flocks for the weavers’ looms.

Relic forges can appear anywhere a divine crafter decides to set up shop. While many of them are hidden away in Terra Incognitae or Otherworlds, to prevent just anyone from wandering in seeking the makers’ services, plenty are scattered throughout the World. One forge God totes his anvil around the ren faire circuit, spending his weekends throughout the summer and fall making fantasy blades for paying crowds. A popular crafting competition show features artisans competing for a year’s apprenticeship at one of Enki’s studios, which isn’t beneath Anu’s red stone dome but is instead somewhere in Ohio.

Still, many relic forges are in places that are either extremely hard for mortals to reach or are outright inhospitable to them, such as in the heart of a volcano or so deep below the sea that the pressure would kill most people. Gods bless their honored guests with the ability to withstand such brutal conditions, though plenty of clever Demigods looking to add to their own Legends have found ways to sneak in uninvited.

Relic Organizations

Relic organizations are societies whose members dedicate their lives not only to crafting relics, but also to retrieving items of power that are lost or broken when a Scion dies. Often, a God may send her agent to retrieve the relic, so she might gift it to another of her worthy children. However, some never claim their goods, and the organization’s members become the item’s caretakers, responsible for its safety and repair, and sometimes choosing a new Scion to pass the relic on to. While many trace their origins back to a particular God, these organizations are neither cults nor followers — they’re more dedicated to preserving relics and the tools and techniques needed for making them than they are loyal to any particular deity.

Such organizations include a blacksmith’s society that dates back thousands of years, their first forges lit by a volcano God’s fires. An online community of fiber artists shares patterns and tutorials inspired by Xochiquetzal, Athena, Dayisun, Umai Khatun, Mokosh, and other weaving gods; members travel to conferences to give talks on ancient techniques and modern trends, and take commissions from Scions looking for a quality piece. New groups form as well — a collection of deifan makers who started out selling mundane copies of their favorite Scions’ relics moved into making the real things when a Demigod noticed the quality of their work and got involved.

Organizations range from open to secretive and can be hyper-local or World-spanning. Some welcome into their fold anyone curious about the history or creation of relics, while others only accept those who’ve dedicated themselves to years of study or produced masterworks on their own. While the groups aren’t necessarily led by Scions or Legendary creatures, they frequently welcome them at least as associate members. After all, a group of mortals with a warehouse full of magical trinkets tends to need some help protecting their goods.

Not all of these groups seek relics for study or sale. We-Stor-It provides secure facilities for keeping precious relics safe, whether it’s for a priest awaiting the go-ahead to bestow a Birthright upon a newly Visited Scion, or for the Gods themselves as they wait for someone to pick up their Mantle. The company has existed for a century in different iterations. Its board has ensured the transfer of older relics through name changes and moves, including a silver bridle intended for a Pendragon.

Creating Relic Forges and Organizations

When creating relic forges and organizations for your game, consider the following:

  • Where is it located? Is the forge somewhere in the World or tucked away in a Terra Incognita? Does the organization have offices in a major city, or do members meet in the basement of the town library?
  • How does a Scion access it? Are there hidden entrances or rituals that open the way? Can anyone stroll in or make an appointment? Does the group advertise itself or prefer to operate in secret?
  • Who founded it? Does a weaving God teach lessons at her loom? Did a society of dvergar buy part of an old ironworks building and restore it? Are the founders still around, or are they long gone, whether they’re dead or moved on to other ventures?
  • As an optional feature, choose a Purview or title that serves as a specialty or theme. A relic forge with the Sky Purview might work on items dedicated to flight. A glassblower’s guild calling themselves “The Unbreakable Cups” produces tableware that, when used by people seeking to make an alliance or swear an oath, strengthens those promises.
  • Choose a Drive that all members possess. If an individual SGC is a part of the group or a maker at the forge, they automatically receive this as one of their Drives. It might be anything from “I will make items of the highest quality” to “I will protect the secret techniques my predecessors discovered.”

Membership Perks

Whether a Scion seeks out a relic forge to craft her own epic weapon or enlists the services of a relic organization, these entities operate independently. The Scion might have to impress a forge’s foreman or perform a favor in order to gain access to it, and may find her invitation revoked if she brings trouble along in her wake or hogs the anvil. It’s worth staying in their good graces — working at a forge or gaining the aid of an organization grants the Scion bonuses to crafting projects.

Even with their independence, both forges and organizations can become Fatebound as a Scion spends time with them and entangles herself in their affairs. For more on Fatebinding locations and groups, see Scion: Demigod, pp. 146-149.

Crafting in a relic forge or enlisting an organization’s help grants the Scion one of the following benefits:

  • The relic gains an additional motif echoing the forge’s Purview or organization’s title for free.
  • The relic gains a unique Knack in keeping with the forge’s or organization’s theme.
  • Halve an interval’s duration without introducing a Complication.
  • Halve the rating of a Flaw incurred from a crafting interval that takes place at the forge.
  • Gain a specialty in a subject of your choice from the knowledge the organization imparted.

New Path: Relic Organization

The character is immersed in a relic organization, able to draw upon her colleagues’ knowledge and her own years of training under experts’ watchful eyes. Perhaps she grew up among an ancient society of makers, learning not only their most complicated techniques, but also the histories behind them. Or maybe her passion for her craft led her to discover a community of like-minded creators, who she can always go to for troubleshooting and support.

This can function as either an Origin or a Role Path.

  • Connections: Fellow makers, Demigod of the Forge, Materials supplier
  • Path Skills: Academics, Athletics, Culture, Firearms, Occult, Science, Technology

CURRENTLY CROWDFUNDING

Join in on the latest Exalted expansion sourcebook

Never before has Creation known the perils of the Abyssal Exalted. They have emerged from the gloom of the Underworld as champions of death, sworn to the service of the Deathlords and the Neverborn. Each was offered the gift of the Bleak Exaltation at the moment of their own demise, and each chose to willingly become an agent of the apocalypse. Their motivations are as manifold as any others — they may seek destruction or domination, malice or justice, ancient secrets hidden and forbidden or sheer iron-willed survival.

In service to their lieges, these deathknights will grind the Underworld to heel and scour life from the face of Creation. Or…they might break from those oaths and set themselves up as death’s own Lawgivers, ruling empires of the dead as sages, arbiters, and reapers. All that can be known for sure is that with the Abyssal Exalted loosed upon the world, it will never be the same again.

Sept '23 Update: Peek at Path to Apotheosis
7 months ago – Tue, Sep 19, 2023 at 09:12:27 AM

Hello Demigods,

No big news for this bi-monthly update, but I do have a peek/information preview about one of our Stretch Goal rewards, the Path to Apotheosis supplement.

Unlocked via Stretch Goals during our Kickstarter campaign and added as a bonus reward to the rewards lists of all backers who received the Scion: Demigod PDF, I've asked Matthew Dawkins to share some information about the book so we can know a little more while we eagerly await it's release.

Path to Apotheosis presents a collection of scenarios for Scion: Demigod, summarized in the book’s introduction as follows:

The Path to Apotheosis

The three adventures of this book take place at three key points in the life of a Demigod, as follows:

  •  Threads of Fate, Winds of Death: As the Scions just make the turn to Demigods, they realize that the World is so much more complex and dangerous than they could have imagined beforehand. With new power comes new perspective, as well as new choices. The Band is called to the town of Amber Falls, where a plague has ravaged the populace, and the local Band of Demigods seem to be powerless to stop it. Dr. Annabelle Stoll of the Curses & Plagues Control summons the Band for fresh eyes on the problem.
  •  When The World Bares Her Teeth: The Demigods hit their stride. They know themselves, and there’s more path behind them than in front. In this adventure, Ares calls upon them to help investigate an incident with one of his Demigod Scions’ Band after combat with a manifestation of the Titan Tlaltecuhtli.
  •  Devour the Sun: The Band nears the end of their path, and the stakes rise to new heights. Before initiating Theophany, the Demigods could have taken another road. Now, the scales of Fate hold Godhood on one side and death on the other; it is up to the Demigods to shape their futures. They are drawn into the Thrice-Tenth Kingdom, an Overworld of the Bogovi, to investigate the apparent death or disappearance of another Demigod, uncovering his various sins.

Threads of Fate, Winds of Death takes place in the small, rural town of Amber Falls. The community is no stranger to problems of mythical nature, as the past deeds of a beloved Band of Demigods who took residence in town attests, but recently the situation took a turn for the worse. Disease, drought, and mysterious disappearances trouble Amber Falls on such a magnitude that the Curses & Plagues Control — the CPC — dispatched several teams to keep the situation under control, to no avail. While the citizens place their faith in the local Demigods to save the town, unaware that the Scions have a central role behind the problems of Amber Falls, a CPC doctor unwilling to “wait and hope for the best” contacts the player characters for help, the sudden thought of getting in touch with them born out of the machinations of Fate.

When the Band arrives, they find Amber Falls on the verge of collapse. Famine, disease, and death have held the entire town by the throat for several weeks, turning a pleasant little corner of the World into an eerie spectacle of devastation. What was once the kind of rural American town people send postcards from is now a desolate place whose streets would stand empty if not for CPC’s vans and tents.

Ruin came in a matter of days, striking everyone and everything. No family has been spared, and those whose members aren’t forced to bed, or worse, struggle to work fields filled with grey plants that turn into dust the moment the wind blows.

Merely stepping into Amber Falls triggers the clear perception something’s wrong with the town. Gusts of wind run through its deserted roads, and yet the air feels still and oppressive. Aside from the occasional person desperately attempting to keep up with a daily routine, silence reigns over town so much that steps echo, and the buzz of stray insects resounds like the howling of wild animals.

This opening scenario takes the player characters through all the beats of investigation, intrigue, and action-adventure, culminating quite possibly in a confrontation with the Demon of the West Wind. And this is only the first scenario in the book. Expect a great deal of play possibilities in Path to Apotheosis.

Titans Rising

Just a reminder that we've got 9 days left in our Kickstarter campaign for Titans Rising!

Titans Rising builds on the foundations of Scion: Titanomachy, explaining the grand conflict between the Gods and Titans. It delves into the very heart of Titanhood, revealing that some Titans truly are just misunderstood and that conflict based on whom someone’s parents are is problematic at best. The book presents Titanic Scions — not just as playable characters, but as heroes, despite their bitter conflicts with some of Scion's more established names, like Eric Donner, Yukiko Kuromizu, and Little Mao. Can your game’s Scions repair the rift between Gods and Titans? How many Titans are better than their reputation and which Gods are worse than theirs? Whom can your Scions trust and whom must be destroyed once and for all?

Titans Rising looks hard at Titans, their Scions, and their servants as one side in the war, fleshing out the conflict between these two divine factions and delving into the heart of what it means to be the Offspring of a Titan. It includes rules for playing Titanic Scions, profiles of characters and creatures to fight against or alongside, and an in-depth look at how to use the Second Titanomachy in your Scion game.

  • Rules for creating Titanic Scions at Origin, Hero, Demigod, and God-tier, including over 50 new Knacks and 60 Birthrights.
  • Profiles and agendas for 50 Titans to use as foes or progenitors.
  • 46 new Antagonists to challenge characters from pre-Visitation to post-Apotheosis.
  • 27 ready-to-use story seeds, suitable for standalone stories or short arcs.

As we did with Scion: Demigod, we're previewing the entire draft manuscript weekly during the campaign. All backers will be able to read the entire book next Tuesday when the final chapter drops - before any pledges are processed or payments collected. But why wait? You can read 75% of the book today by backing now!

The Titans Are Coming
8 months ago – Wed, Aug 23, 2023 at 11:57:33 AM

Hello Demigods,

I'm gonna throw off our bi-monthly rhythm by squeezing in an update this month, but 'll have our regular bi-monthly update again in September, so it's kind of a bonus. I wanted to touch base with you quickly this month because there's a new Scion Second Edition project coming soon! No, not Scion: Once and Future... that's currently in layout and will likely be released on DriveThruRPG in the upcoming months.

This is about ... TITANS!

The First Titanomachy concluded millennia ago, with the Gods climbing over the shattered bodies of their foes to claim the thrones of the Overworlds. The defeated Titans lay buried beneath the World or imprisoned by the war’s victors. But Titans have always lived by their own terms, and those do not include staying dead or in chains. One by one, Titans claw their way back up from their prisons and Underworlds. This time, they gather in shadows, growing in strength and numbers.

It is only a matter of time before the struggle between the Titans and the Gods lunges from the shadows, setting entire Realms ablaze and even spilling out into the World.

That time draws nigh.

Now is the time of Titans Rising.

Beyond moral quandaries, Titans Rising also opens wide the doors of player options for Titanic characters, including new ways to engage in high level gameplay as leaders of a besieging army who seek to reclaim their homeland from the Gods. And for games fighting on the Gods’ side of the Titanomachy, there are numerous plot seeds, adversaries, and Birthrights to be used against the Titans and their Scions.

Indeed, as noted, Titans Rising builds upon the foundation laid out in Titanomachy. As as Rich noted in the recent Monday Meeting Notes

This Kickstarter is so that we can traditionally print Titanomachy and also its sequel: Titans Rising! TR is entirely new to y’all, and of course, Titanomachy has already been a smash-hit in PDF and PoD versions on DTRPG! It got such a great response that we figure that getting it traditionally printed and into stores along with its sequel will give a whole ‘nother audience a chance to check them out!

And for that, we need this Kickstarter campaign (where you can pledge for both books or either of them) that starts next week!

You can sign up and be sure to get notified before it goes live right here:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/titans-rising-and-titanomachy-for-scion-2nd-edition-rpg

Just to give you folks a little idea of what’s actually in Titans Rising, here are some thoughts from two of the book’s developers:

DAVID CASTRO: Titans Rising will bring the titans of pantheons from Demigod, God, Once and Future, and Masks of the Mythos to fans, giving them the full length and breadth of the World and its antagonists. It provides rules for Titanic Scions at the Demigod and God levels of play, and explores the implications of the Second Titanomachy on the World, and on your games both as a player and as a Story Guide. All in all, Titans Rising provides options for all player options, regardless of which side of the Titanomachy they find themselves on.

CAT EVANS: Playable Titans. Playable Titans, Playable Titans, playable Titans. Play them at any tier! Play them as heroes, monsters, or complicated, multifaceted individuals! Play them in the chapter of story hooks and tracks we’ve provided, or weave them into your ongoing games. Give them new Callings, Birthrights and Knacks.  Most of all, play them to finally call the Gods on their bullshit.

Hope that piques your curiosity and you’ll join us on Tuesday the 29th!

With all that out of the way, here's a quick summary of where Scion: Demigod stands. No big changes this month - our regular update was scheduled for next month, so hoping I'll have some progress to note at the end of September.

Trinity Continuum: Aegis is a game of epic adventure and exploration set during Greece’s Iron Age. The setting features figures and events from history and mythology, viewed through the lens of the Trinity Continuum. In this game you’ll play Champions, Oracles, and Olympians — characters who have come into contact with the mysterious substance called ambrosia and been transformed into Inspired individuals with powers similar to Talents, Psiads, and Novas millennia ahead of their counterparts’ times. These characters live in an age of wonder and discovery. People in the ancient world made amazing strides in science, exploration, and philosophy, all while grappling (sometimes literally!) with gods and monsters. About a decade ago, bright streaks flashed across the sky and a fiery object crashed into Mount Olympus. Other pieces landed throughout the world, creating heroes and horrors wherever they touched down.

Trinity Continuum: Aegis continues to explore the Trinity Continuum’s themes of hope, sacrifice, and unity — in an age where societies are in decline and survival sometimes feels uncertain, these are the tenets under which people band together.
